The planning committee at Hackney Council has approval to build a new school at 65-67 Lordship Road, Hackney, the former site of the Avigdor Primary School.

The £10.5 million new build…

…will increase the school’s capacity by 30%, from 80 to around 110 pupils from the ages 2 to 19, as well as doubling the floor area of the current school. This will give more Jewish families the opportunity to place their children in a local special needs Jewish school.

The building work will Iy’h commence in July 2017 and will take 2 years to complete. The site which the school currently occupies was kindly lent to Side by Side by the Local Authority on a provisional basis with impermanent facilities. Now, after 5 years of campaigning, a brand new permanent school is being built which will provide the very highest quality in education in the heart of East London.

The new state-of-the-art school will have 16 classrooms and facilities including a therapy room and a sensory room where children will learn to adapt to the environment around them. These form just a small part of the many purpose built facilities the school will offer.

This mammoth project also includes the construction of 18 modern flats to be built above the school, which are to be sold or let to minimise the overall cost of the building project.

Jacob Sorotzkin, Chairman of Side by Side commented: “This exciting and ambitious plan will ensure that our current and future pupils have a place where they can learn, flourish and excel. We are confident of the community’s support to turn this project into a reality.”
